Roomful of Blues' self-titled debut album, released in 1977 on Island Records, was later reissued as *The First Album*. Songwriter Doc Pomus helped them secure their first record deal and co-produced the album with Joel Dorn. The album brought them to national attention and is considered a blues classic. It showcases the talents of all the band members and is a hard-swinging affair.
The album captures the band's blend of swing, rock and roll, jump blues, boogie-woogie, and soul. Roomful of Blues was developing a strong following on the East Coast when they secured the record contract with Island Records. The album sounded as authentic as any original big band.
