About

Dire Straits' "Live 1978-1992" is a comprehensive live album compilation released in multiple formats, including an 8-CD box set and a 12-LP box set. It features newly remastered versions of the band's classic live albums, "Alchemy: Dire Straits Live" and "On the Night", which were previously out of print on vinyl. The collection also includes the "Encores" EP, remastered for Black Friday 2021, the licensed 1995 collection "Live at the BBC", and the previously unreleased "Dire Straits Live from the Rainbow Theatre" show from 1979, mixed by Guy Fletcher. The box set comes with a booklet featuring an essay by journalist Paul Sexton. The expanded edition of "Alchemy" includes the full-length performance of "Portobello Belle," a segment of which appeared on the 1998 "Money for Nothing" compilation, as well as previously unreleased tracks "Industrial Disease" and "Twisting by the Pool". The expanded edition of "On the Night" features previously unreleased tracks from shows in Nimes, Rotterdam, and Paris, including songs like "Tunnel of Love," "Telegraph Road," "Sultans of Swing," "Two Young Lovers," "When It Comes to You," and "I Think I Love You Too Much". The "Live at the Rainbow Theatre" recording captures the band after the success of "Sultans of Swing" but before their global popularity exploded with "Brothers in Arms".

It includes remastered versions of classic live albums like "Alchemy" and "On The Night", plus previously unreleased material, offering fans a deeper look into the band's live performances. The inclusion of the "Live at the Rainbow Theatre" show from 1979 is particularly significant, as it captures the band in its early days and features the original lineup. The collection showcases the band's musicianship, with extended versions of songs like "Telegraph Road" and "Private Investigations". The box set is considered a valuable addition to any respectable popular music collection.

The "Live at the Rainbow Theatre" recording from 1979 captures the final show played by the original Dire Straits lineup, before David Knopfler's departure. The "On Every Street" tour was so massive that seven million people attended, and Mark Knopfler decided it would be the last Dire Straits tour.
