About

The Gates of Paradise is the fourth solo album by British guitarist and composer Robert Fripp. Released on April 28, 1998, the album continues Fripp's exploration of ambient and experimental textures, which he referred to as "soundscapes". The album consists of two lengthy tracks, each divided into multiple parts, depicting contrasting states of terror and peace. 'The Outer Darkness' explores themes of purgatory and hell, while 'The Gates of Paradise' delves into blissful states. The majority of the album was assembled from studio performances recorded in the music room at DGM in the spring of 1994. Sections I and XI of 'The Outer Darkness' are taken from live performances at the Cervantes Theatre in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on June 9, 1994. Section III of 'The Gates of Paradise' was performed and recorded in the foyer of the Queen Elizabeth Hall on March 9, 1996.
