"Accidentally on Purpose" is a collaborative album by Deep Purple bandmates Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, released in February 1988. The album emerged from songs that didn't quite fit Deep Purple's style during the "The House of Blue Light" sessions. Gillan and Glover recorded the album to explore a different musical direction, leaning towards pop rock and soft rock. The recording sessions began at George Martin's AIR Studios in Montserrat with engineer Nick Blagona. Additional recording and mixing took place in New York.
The album showcases Gillan and Glover's songwriting and vocal talents, featuring melodic and accessible songs with catchy hooks and polished production. Many guest musicians contributed to the album, including Dr. John, George Young, and Andy Newmark. Gillan has expressed that this album is one of his personal favorites, especially because it followed a difficult creative period with Deep Purple.
Recording Info
The album was recorded in two phases: October 1986 in Montserrat at AIR Studios, and September 1987 at The Power Station in New York City, Minot Studio and Sountec Studios, Connecticut. It was produced by Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, and engineered by Nick Blagona.

Significance
The album allowed Gillan and Glover to explore musical styles outside of Deep Purple's hard rock sound. Gillan felt frustrated with Deep Purple's lack of work at the time, leading to this side project. While it may not have achieved the same commercial success as their other projects, it remains a noteworthy collaboration and a unique addition to their discographies.
The track "Lonely Avenue" appeared on the soundtrack to the movie "Rain Man", starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise.
