About

Laurel Hell is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Mitski, released on February 4, 2022, through Dead Oceans. It marked her return after a hiatus following her previous album, *Be the Cowboy*. The album's title, *Laurel Hell*, refers to the folk term for being trapped in thickets of laurel in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Mitski described the album as a soundtrack for transformation, exploring themes of vulnerability, resilience, sorrow, and love. She wrote the songs needing love songs about real relationships and songs that could help her forgive herself and others. The album was written mostly before and during 2018 and finished during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Mitski recorded *Laurel Hell* with her longtime producer Patrick Hyland throughout the isolation of a global pandemic, during which some of the songs “slowly took on new forms and meanings, like seed to flower”. The album evolved to be more uptempo and dance-y.
