About

Die Lit is the debut studio album by American rapper Playboi Carti. It was surprise-released on May 11, 2018, through AWGE and Interscope Records. Carti recorded the album in Atlanta between December 2017 and March 2018, after his debut mixtape Playboi Carti (2017). The album is characterized by its trap and mumble rap sound, incorporating elements of cloud rap, fragmented production with synthesizers and 808 drums, and an ad-lib-heavy delivery that emphasizes mood over lyrical complexity. Lyrical themes include hedonism, drugs, wealth, sex, relationships, and women. The album features guest appearances from artists such as Skepta, Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, Nicki Minaj, Bryson Tiller, Chief Keef, Gunna, Red Coldhearted, Young Thug, and Young Nudy. Pi'erre Bourne served as the executive producer, with additional production from Art Dealer, Don Cannon, IndigoChildRick, and Maaly Raw. The album's cover art, revealed by ASAP Rocky, features a black-and-white photo of Carti stage-diving, inspired by an old punk rock show.

Die Lit received generally positive reviews, with critics praising its appeal and production. Some critics felt it lacked depth and originality, while others saw it as a modern cornerstone of the trap genre. The album debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200, selling 61,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. In July 2019, it was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album has been cited as an early influence on the emergence of the rage microgenre of trap music in the early 2020s. It is known for its influence on the trap genre and is considered by some to be Carti's best project.

The man on the album cover, initially mistaken for Dave Grohl, was identified as actor Francisco Marcano, who appeared in the music video for "R.I.P."
