About

To Pimp a Butterfly is the third studio album by American rapper Kendrick Lamar, released on March 15, 2015, by Top Dawg Entertainment, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records. The album was recorded in various studios across the United States between November 2012 and February 2015. Production was handled by Sounwave, Terrace Martin, Taz "Tisa" Arnold, Thundercat, Rahki, LoveDragon, Flying Lotus, Pharrell Williams, Boi-1da, Knxwledge, and others, with Dr. Dre and Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith serving as executive producers. Primarily a hip-hop album, To Pimp a Butterfly incorporates elements of jazz, funk, soul, G-funk, and neo soul. Lyrically, the album delves into themes of African-American culture, racial inequality, depression, and institutional discrimination, inspired by Lamar's visit to South Africa. The album follows the stages of a caterpillar, from caterpillar to cocoon to butterfly. The title itself is a metaphor for the exploitation of black people and culture.
